“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives to all men generously and without reproaching, and it will be given him.” - James 1:5 (RSV)

There was a season in our lives when Vernon faced one of the most significant decisions of his career. After serving faithfully for 22 years in the Air Force, he was preparing to retire and step into civilian work. Five different companies had offered him positions - each with strong benefits, each with potential, and each with its own appeal.

The difference in pay between the highest and lowest offer was $12.50 an hour. From a practical standpoint, I hoped he would choose the highest-paying job. I had spent ten years as a stay‑at‑home mom, then nine years working part‑time, and had only recently stepped into full‑time work. The higher salary would have given us more financial breathing room.

But Vernon was torn. Every option seemed good. None seemed clearly wrong. And the weight of choosing “the right one” pressed heavily on both of us.

That same week, our parish was holding a mission. On Friday evening, after everyone else had left the church to gather for supper in the annex, Vernon and I remained behind. We knelt before Jesus in the Tabernacle and prayed. (You don’t need to be in a church or before a Tabernacle to pray like this — God meets us wherever we turn our hearts toward Him.) In the quiet, each of us asked the Lord for clarity.

As I sat in silence, listening for the Lord’s voice, I distinctly heard these words in my heart: “John is the key.”

I whispered to Vernon, “Was anyone who interviewed you named John?” He shook his head. “No.”

We ended our time of prayer and joined the others for supper, unsure of what the message meant.

On Sunday after Mass, we were in the annex having coffee and donuts. I was talking with Father Jack, while Vernon was speaking with a few men nearby. Father Jack had overheard some of Vernon’s conversation, and asked what it was about. I explained Vernon’s dilemma and the need to make a decision by Monday.

Father Jack turned toward Vernon and casually spoke the name of one of the companies. I looked at him, surprised, and asked him to repeat it.

Something stirred in me. I turned to Father Jack and asked, “What is your name?” He smiled. “Jack.” “No,” I said gently, “your birth name.” He paused. “Well… it’s John.”

I looked at Vernon and said, “There’s your answer. John is the key.

Vernon accepted the position Father Jack had named. It was the lowest-paying offer; so we most likely would not have chosen that position. And yet, now nineteen years later, we still marvel at how perfectly God guided that decision. It truly was the best choice he could have made.

Had we not prayed… Had we not listened… Had we not taken seriously the quiet whisper of the Holy Spirit… we might have missed the wisdom God was offering.

We didn’t understand the “why” at the time. But we trusted the One who did.

Guidance for Every Step

Wisdom is one of God’s most generous gifts. He does not withhold it. He does not ration it. He does not give it only to the spiritually mature or the deeply learned.

James 1:5-6 tells us:

“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives to all men generously and without reproaching, and it will be given him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting…”

Matthew 17:5 says:

“A voice from the cloud said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.”

Proverbs 3:5-6 tells us:

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not rely on your own insight. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.”

These passages together reveal a beautiful truth:

God truly does gift to us His wisdom.

He gives it to the one who asks.

He gives it to the one who listens.

He gives it to the one who trusts.

And, Philippians 4:19 assures us:

“… God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.”

Wisdom is not merely offered - it is a promise.

Reflection Points

1. God’s Generosity

God does not shame us for not knowing what to do. He invites us to come to Him with open hands and honest hearts. His wisdom is not scarce - it is abundant, personal, and timely.

2. Wisdom as a Spiritual Provision

Wisdom is more than information. It is God’s guidance applied to real life - decisions, relationships, crossroads, and seasons of uncertainty.

3. Asking in Faith

When we ask God for wisdom, we are not begging - we are responding to His invitation. Faith opens our ears to hear and our hearts to trust.

4. Wisdom for the Journey

God’s wisdom steadies us when the road is unclear. It helps us discern not just what is good, but what is best.

Closing Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank You for being a God who gives wisdom generously and without hesitation. Teach me to seek Your guidance before I take a step, and to trust Your voice above all others. Help me listen with a quiet heart, receive with faith, and walk in the direction You lead. May Your wisdom steady my decisions, shape my path, and draw me closer to You each day. Amen.
